Two Men Shoot At Each Other, One Struck By Gunfire, Outside Kaiser Permanente

Two men shot at each other, and one was struck by gunfire, outside Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center Wednesday, prompting a lockdown at the hospital as authorities searched for the assailants.

Reports of the shooting near the hospital at 1011 Baldwin Park Blvd. began around 8 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Moses Marroquin said.

One man shot multiple times at another man in the hospital’s front patient drop-off parking lot, hitting him at least once, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. The second man returned fire, but it is not clear if the first man was struck by gunfire.

The second man took himself to a different hospital and has been identified by authorities, who are not releasing his name to the public. It was not immediately clear if he was arrested.

The first man fled the scene, police said.

He is described as Hispanic in his 30s, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, 220 pounds, and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and gray shorts, according to police.

“He is considered armed and dangerous,” police said.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the man who was struck by gunfire, and it is unclear what prompted the shooting.

Baldwin Park police and CHP officers responded to the scene, but both men were gone by the time authorities arrived.

Law enforcement ordered a lockdown at the hospital, sparking social media speculation by people at the facility that there was an active shooter at the medical facility, but there was no such threat.

“Our patients and staff are safe,” according to a Twitter post from the hospital. “No dangerous activity in the hospital. We are cooperating with local law enforcement.”

At 10 a.m., the hospital tweeted that the lockdown had been lifted.

Anyone with information about the suspect was urged to call the Baldwin Park Police Department at 626-960-1955 or Detective Jose Castro at 626-960-1055, extension 409.
