by Contributing Editor

A 38-year-old felon who led police on a short chase in Beaumont Saturday was arrested on suspicion of illegally possessing a firearm.

Officers attempted to pull over a vehicle at about 9:05 a.m. near Seventh Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, but the driver sped off, touching off a pursuit, according to the Beaumont Police Department.

Eventually, the driver allegedly ditched his vehicle and fled on foot through the 1200 block of Antonell Court. While fleeing, he fired a single gunshot from a firearm he was carrying, police said. No one was injured.

Officers managed to arrest the man and the firearm was later located inside a nearby recreational vehicle, according to investigators.

Jerry Ray Elliott of Banning was booked into jail on suspicion of evading an officer, possession of narcotics, being a felon in possession of a firearm and violation of parole.

A woman who had been riding with Elliott in the vehicle was also arrested for a misdemeanor warrant.
