Arson Fire Erupts in West Perris, Prompting Brief Evacuations

by Contributing Editor

A wildfire, which authorities said was caused by arson, scorched nearly 5 acres on the west end of Perris Thursday, prompting brief evacuations.

The non-injury Navajo Fire was reported about 4:45 p.m. in the area of Navajo Road and Highway 74, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The fire was 4.5 acres and 40% contained by 7 p.m., the department reported. Homes on Park Avenue were briefly evacuated.

More than a dozen engine crews and two hand crews were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a rapid rate to the southeast, approaching properties ringing Park Avenue, according to the department.

Crews immediately established protective lines to prevent the fire from reaching the residences, none of which were damaged.

The fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped at 5:30 p.m.

The fire was caused by arson, authorities said.
