Officers Recover Handgun After Fleeing Suspect Fires at Them

by Contributing Editor

Detectives were searching for a car burglary suspect who allegedly fired at officers during a foot pursuit Saturday in the Vermont Square area of Los Angeles.

About 5:20 a.m. at Vernon and La Salle avenues, officers spotted a man suspected of burglarizing a vehicle who began grabbing his front waistband when he saw officers getting out of their patrol car, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Officers went in foot pursuit of the suspect, who began discarding items of property and turned in the direction of the officers, at which time, officers heard a shot fired as the suspect continued to run,” the statement read.

The officers called for help and set up a perimeter in hopes of locating the suspect, described as Hispanic, 25-30 years-old, with a shaved head, wearing a red backpack, officials said.

He was not located within the perimeter and LAPD Robbery-Homicide detectives assumed responsibility for the continuing investigation, officials said.

Officers recovered a handgun and the backpack, LAPD Officer Mike Chan said.

Anyone with information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-222- TIPS (8477) or go to lacrimestoppers.org.
