Man Arrested for Alleged Vandalism in Claremont Motel

by Contributing Editor

Officers arrested a 33-year-old parolee possibly under the influence of drugs — who had been released from state prison the day before — for allegedly trashing a motel room in Claremont, a police sergeant said Saturday.

Officers were dispatched at about 7 p.m. Friday to a motel near the San Bernardino (10) Freeway and Indian Hill Boulevard regarding a man inside a room last seen armed with a knife, who was heard yelling and throwing property inside the room, Claremont Police Sgt. Brian Thompson said.

“During the investigation, multiple voices were heard screaming inside the room,” Thompson said. “Officers entered the room and found the suspect barricaded inside the lavatory. The suspect was taken into custody. There was no one else inside the room and it was later determined that the suspect was yelling in both Spanish and English.”

The man — identified as Eufemio Alvarez — caused “significant damage” to the room, police said. The hotel managers estimated the cost of repairs to be over $6,000.

Alvarez, who had just been released from state prison the day before for an unspecified crime, was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism, resisting arrest and being under the influence of a controlled substance. The La Verne resident was placed on a no-bail parole hold.
