Hiker Down Report Prompts Emergency Response in Cleveland National Forest

A hiker who fell ill Wednesday while on a trail in the Cleveland National Forest west of Murrieta was able to walk out of the preserve with the help of another hiker, as Riverside County firefighters were preparing to mount a rescue operation.

The hiker down call was received about 4:30 p.m. a mile north of the Tenaja Trailhead, near the intersection of Cleveland National Forest and Tenaja roads, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Multiple engine crews from the county and city of Murrieta were sent to the location and staged at the trailhead parking lot, requesting a sheriff’s helicopter crew to fly overhead to determine exactly where the stranded party was located and possibly perform a hoist rescue.

The chopper was reportedly tied up on calls, and firefighters were preparing to hike into the forest when the victim walked out with the aid of another hiker at 5:15 p.m., according to reports from the scene.

Paramedics assessed the victim, but there was no word on whether medical treatment was necessary, nor could officials immediately confirm the nature of the individual’s problem.
