A 4-year-old was killed and a 7-year-old was critically injured Wednesday in a Pasadena apartment complex fire, which also left their mother with significant injuries.
Firefighters were dispatched at about 2 p.m. to 169 East Washington Boulevard near North Summit Avenue, according to Lisa Derderian, spokeswoman for the city of Pasadena.
Crews made it on scene within three minutes, but two lower-level apartment units were already well-involved and flames were spreading to upper units.
The second-alarm fire was extinguished at about 2:30 p.m., but fire crews remained on scene to investigate the cause, Derderian said.
The 4-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, she said. Reporters at the scene said the victim was a girl.
Her 7-year-old sibling was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and the children’s mother was also taken to a hospital with “significant” injuries, according to Derderian.
Authorities instructed residents to avoid Washington Boulevard between Marengo Avenue and Iowa Avenue because of the blaze, the Pasadena Fire Department said.
