A man and a woman were killed Monday in a shootout with a Riverside nightclub security guard, who was wounded but is expected to survive.
The confrontation occurred shortly after midnight outside El Calentano at 10390 Arlington Ave., near Jones Avenue, on Riverside’s west side, Riverside Police Department Officer Ryan Railsback said.
“Preliminary investigation shows the adult male suspect and female companion were inside the club when security asked them to leave,” Railsback said.
“They were escorted to the parking lot and got into a vehicle. The male suspect retrieved a firearm, then drove to the front of the business and began firing at the security guards.”
Railsback said one guard was struck by gunfire but managed to shoot back, hitting both the man and his girlfriend.
“Their vehicle accelerated out of the parking lot and across Arlington Avenue, where it collided into a business before coming to rest,” Railsback said.
The man and woman died at the scene, he said. Their names were not immediately released.
The security guard, whose name also was not disclosed, is recovering at Riverside Community Hospital, according to Railsback.
A musician who was playing inside the nightclub told Fox11 the security guard suffered a leg wound, and the musician used his belt as a tourniquet to slow the bleeding.
The circumstances behind the couple being thrown out of the establishment were unclear.
