Man Pleads Guilty to Attempting to Steal Police Car

An 18-year-old Garden Grove man pleaded guilty Monday and was immediately sentenced to 60 days in jail for attempting to steal a police squad car during a protest against police brutality last month.

Quincy Lunford, who told police upon his arrest that he was part of the Black Lives Matter movement, was also placed on three years of informal probation.

Lunford pleaded guilty to resisting arrest, attempted vehicle theft and trespassing with the intent to interfere with governmental business, all misdemeanors. He was initially charged with felonies, but they were reduced to misdemeanors as part of the plea deal, according to court records.

Lunford was arrested about 8 p.m. May 31 after vaulting a wall at Garden Grove police headquarters, according to Lt. Carl Whitney.

Police quickly detained the suspect, “who began claiming he was a member of Black Lives Matter and wanted to steal a police car in protest of police brutality,” Whitney said.

While Lunford was being processed, he scuffled with officers and “grabbed a female officer by the collar and threatened to hit her,” Whitney said.
