A suspected drunk driver accused of causing a rear-end crash that killed a 43-year-old woman in the unincorporated community of Dutch Village remained jailed Saturday in lieu of $1 million bail.

The crash occurred just after 4 p.m. Friday when a 2020 Kia Optima heading south on Winchester Road toward Thompson Road at a high speed smashed into the back of a 2017 Ford Fusion stopped at the red light, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The force of the impact pushed the Ford into the intersection where it crashed with a 2016 Toyota Corolla, the CHP said.

Authorities said the driver of the Kia, 34-year-old Joshua Morris of Temecula, failed to apply the brakes as he approached the Ford from behind.

The unidentified Winchester woman behind the wheel of the Ford was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center but later died of her injuries.

A passenger in the Kia, Sarina Cameron, 39, of Temecula, was also taken to Inland Valley Medical Center with minor injuries.

The driver of the Toyota, Stephany Heraldez of San Marcos, 23, was uninjured, according to the CHP.

Morris, who was also uninjured, was arrested and booked into the Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and murder.
