Woman Who Fled Prisoner Mother Program With Infant Has Been Recaptured

A 28-year-old woman who walked away from the Community Prisoner Mother Program in Pomona with her five-month-old son has been recaptured without incident, said officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Christa Ann Marie Ramirez left the facility at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, spokesman Terry Thornton said.
Acting on a tip, agents with the department found Ramirez with her boyfriend in Pico Rivera at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, officials said.
“Ramirez was taken into custody without incident and was transported to California Institution for Women,” the Department said in a statement late Saturday. “The case will be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for their consideration in the issuance of a criminal complaint.”
The baby was also found safe and turned over to the custody of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, which determined that the boy will stay with relatives, authorities said.
Ramirez was serving a three-year sentence for second-degree burglary when she entered the Community Prisoner Mother Program on Jan. 21 and was scheduled for release on parole in December, Thornton said.
The Community Prisoner Mother Program is a 24-bed community-based facility in Pomona that provides a community substance abuse treatment program for nonserious, nonviolent female offenders, Thornton said.
The participants have sentences of no more than five years and women in the program are either pregnant or have two or fewer children under age six living with them at the facility.
