Mecca Parolee Accused of Leading Deputies on High-Speed Chase in Stolen Car

by Contributing Editor

A parolee was in custody without bail Thursday after allegedly leading sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase through Thermal and into Mecca in a stolen vehicle.

Deputies on Wednesday were driving near Polk Street and Martinez Road in Thermal at 6:22 p.m. investigating a report of a stolen vehicle when they saw it on the roadway, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled, leading them on a chase that covered “several roadways in the south county of Thermal” then into Mecca, officials said.

Once in Mecca, the driver, later identified as Mecca resident Carlos Octavio Cerros, 21, allegedly hopped the sidewalk near Mecca Elementary School and ran away on foot through the school, according to sheriff’s officials.

Neighbors later spotted Cerros hiding in their backyard and alerted authorities, who arrested him on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, evading a peace officer and violating his parole.

Cerros remains in custody at the Blythe jail awaiting his arraignment scheduled for Friday.
