A Los Angeles Police Department officer investigating an unrelated incident near Whittier Tuesday saw one of two men walking produce a handgun and shot one of them, police said.
Officers were conducting an investigation near Laurel Avenue and Beaty Avenue in an unincorporated area near Whittier when they saw the two men walking about 5 p.m., according to an LAPD official.
Police say one of the men produced a handgun and an officer shot one of them. It was not immediately clear if the man shot was the man who allegedly had the handgun.
The victim was taken to a hospital. His vital signs were reported to be stable, the official said.
The other man was arrested without incident and officers recovered a firearm at the scene.
No officers were injured during the shooting.
