A man was barricaded inside a Whittier apartment Sunday evening after leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed pursuit that started when he allegedly tried to run over a police officer in Burbank, authorities said.
The pursuit began about 10:15 p.m. near San Fernando Boulevard and Avon Street, said California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball.
Police and CHP officers were led on the Golden State (5) Freeway south to the Pomona (60) Freeway east and to the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway south, when the driver of the black Nissan Frontier pickup went onto surface streets in the Whittier area until the driver bailed out and ran inside an apartment complex at 8356 Sergeant Ave. in Whittier, Kimball said.
The passenger in the pickup was detained at that scene, Kimball said.
As of 11:23 p.m., the CHP, Burbank and Whittier police had not called for the sheriff’s SWAT team, according to Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
