A car driving in Universal City sheared off a fire hydrant, sending up a geyser of water that shorted out power lines above, leading to a large explosion that knocked out power to 1,099 residents Saturday night.
The series of mishaps started at around 7 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
The car was driving in the area of Cahuenga Boulevard and Regal Place when it struck the fire hydrant. Los Angeles fire officials said the driver was not hurt.
A short in the power lines being sprayed with water led to a bright flash of light and a loud blast that could be heard for miles around, according to video of the incident.

Traffic lights nearby were knocked out. And nearby neighborhoods in Studio City and the Hollywood Hills lost power, LADWP said.
Electricity was restored by around 9:30 p.m.
