Reports: Mexican Authorities Find Bodies of Missing Couple

The son-in-law of a Garden Grove couple missing for a week in Mexico was in custody Saturday morning after the bodies of two victims were found at the couple’s rental property in Tijuana.

But it was unclear whether the missing couple were the two victims found on the property.

“I don’t have confirmation these are our victims,” Garden Grove Police Department Lt. Carl Whitney said.

Investigators in Mexico have been tight-lipped about the investigation. But Whitney said he has seen reports from Mexican news sources that during the execution of a search warrant on the couple’s property Friday, they found the bodies buried in a patio or courtyard area.

Maria Lopez, 65, and Jesus Guillen, 70, drove to Tijuana on Jan. 10 to collect rent from tenants and were scheduled to return the same day. When their daughter could not reach them, she called police at 7:10 p.m., Whitney said.

The daughter was tracking the two through a “find my phone” app for iPhones, and it showed that the couple was still at their Tijuana property, but a relative there said they weren’t around, Whitney said. Then the phone went dead and she could not track them anymore, he said.

The couple’s pickup truck was found near their property, he said.

Mexican authorities Friday announced the arrest of the couple’s son-in-law, identified only as Santiago N., who investigators said wanted to stage a kidnapping of the couple and collect ransom.

Prosecutors in Mexico said Santiago was deported from the United States in 2012 after serving time in jail for theft. He was scheduled to be charged with the couple’s disappearance and the deaths.
