Temple City Man, Daughter Plead No Contest in Weapons Case

A Temple City man who was charged with his adult daughter of possessing a cache of illegal weapons in their home pleaded no contest Friday to a pair of firearms charges, while his daughter entered the same plea to a misdemeanor count of being an accessory after the fact.
Steve David Ponder, 59, pleaded no contest to possession of a firearm by a felon and unlawful assault weapon activity, both felonies, according to the District Attorney’s Office. He is expected to be sentenced to six years and eight months in prison when he returns to court in Alhambra on April 8.
His daughter, 29-year-old Riley Elizabeth Ponder, is facing a year of probation and 100 hours of community service stemming from her no contest plea to the misdemeanor accessory charge. She will also be barred from owning, possessing or purchasing firearms while on probation.
Steven Ponder had a prior conviction for counterfeiting money and possession of a machine gun, which barred him from owning firearms, according to prosecutors.
But a search of his home on Feb. 14, 2018, turned up a stockpile of illegal weapons and ammunition, prosecutors said.
He could have faced up to eight years in prison if convicted of the original charges filed against him, which included unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a destructive device and possession of a machine gun.
His daughter originally faced a possible five-year prison term.
