One Suspect Arrested, Second Sought in Separate Shootings in Gardena

A SWAT team Thursday arrested one man suspected in a shooting in Gardena, but were unable to locate a second wanted in connection with a separate shooting outside a doughnut shop in the city.

The first shooting was on May 5 in the 14100 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, on the border with Hawthorne near Rosecrans Avenue, where one victim was struck and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to Gardena Police Department Lt. Christopher Cuff.

Investigators identified Lewis Williams, 41, of Gardena as a suspect in the case and he was taken into custody at his home, Cuff said.

Williams, who was arrested about 4:50 a.m., was being held in lieu of $2 million bail, according sheriff’s inmate records.

The second shooting occurred on Oct. 16 in front of the Donut King at the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard. Witnesses reported seeing three individuals waving guns prior to the shooting, Cuff said.

It’s unclear if anyone was struck, but Alex Bell, 46, of Gardena was identified as a suspect, Cuff said.

“Bell’s whereabouts are currently unknown,” Cuff said.

Investigators are seeking attempted murder charges for both suspects with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, he said.
