L.A. Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for South Bay Bank Robberies

A Los Angeles man was sentenced Friday to 63 months behind bars for the robbery and attempted robbery of four South Bay financial institutions.
Trayvon McNutt, 33, was also ordered to pay a $600 special assessment and almost $25,000 in restitution, and must serve three years on supervised release following his prison term.
U.S. District Judge Andre Birotte Jr. also ordered that McNutt undergo mental health treatment and that he be provided with three months’ worth of psychiatric medications upon his release from prison.
McNutt admitted in Los Angeles federal court in August that between June and September 2018 he used “intimidation” to rob three credit unions, including two of them twice, and attempted to rob a Wells Fargo Bank branch.
Birotte said that one of the most troubling aspects of the case was that McNutt robbed two banks while on pretrial release.
“You need help,” the judge said.
The attempted robbery took place at a Wells Fargo branch in Lynwood, court papers show. McNutt also admitted robbing a Kinecta Federal Credit Union in Gardena in June and September 2018, and a California Credit Union in Carson in July 2018 and again in September 2018, according to his plea agreement. He also acknowledged robbing a second California Credit branch in Torrance.
Prosecutors said that last May, while on pretrial release in the current case, McNutt robbed a Kinecta branch in Hawthorne, making off with $20. Later the same month, he robbed a Wescom Credit Union, also in Hawthorne, according to court documents. McNutt was not charged in those robberies.
In a statement to the court, McNutt apologized to “the United States of America” and his four children.
“I failed them,” he said as more than a dozen supporters members watched from the gallery. “I went on a three-month crime spree. I was asking for help.”
Pedro V. Castillo, McNutt’s attorney, told the court that his client “was dealing with demons in his life. He was on medication — but the wrong medication.”
McNutt was arrested in October 2018 when a law enforcement officer spotted his gold-colored Cadillac XTS on an Inglewood street, officials said. He was pulled over and arrested for multiple outstanding traffic warrants, authorities said.
