One person was killed Friday when a vehicle slammed into a tree and burst into flames in Irvine.

Firefighters and police responded to the intersection of Harvard Avenue and University Drive, near the University of California, Irvine campus, and located the vehicle fully engulfed in flames, according to the Orange County Fire Authority

The driver of the vehicle was declared dead at the scene and a second patient was treated by paramedics. It was unclear if the second patient was taken to a hospital, the OCFA said.

Harvard Avenue between Michelson and University drives was closed in both directions until further notice. Drivers were urged to use alternate routes until the road is reopened, the Irvine Police Department said.

Details of what led up to the accident or whether alcohol, drugs or speed were factors were not immediately available.

The age, gender and name of the victim were not disclosed.
