An ex-convict accused of fatally beating his 25-year-old girlfriend in her Moreno Valley apartment must stand trial for murder and other offenses, a judge ruled Friday.
Latravius Brian Gobert, 33, of Moreno Valley was arrested in March 2018 after he allegedly killed Mariah Malveaux.
Following a preliminary hearing at the Riverside Hall of Justice, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Larrie Brainard found there was sufficient evidence to warrant a trial on the murder count, as well as child endangerment and a sentence-enhancing allegation of committing a crime within five years of parole from state prison.
Brainard scheduled a post-preliminary hearing arraignment for Nov. 22 and left Gobert’s bail set at $1.1 million.
Gobert is being held at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Wally Clear, deputies were called to an apartment complex in the 25000 block of Alessandro Boulevard, near Perris Boulevard, about 4:30 p.m. on March 17, 2018, to investigate reports of a woman in distress.
When deputies entered Malveaux’s apartment, they found her unconscious and struggling to breathe, prompting them to begin CPR, Clear said. Paramedics arrived moments later and continued to attempt to revive the victim, who was taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center, where she died that evening.
The victim’s daughter was present during the alleged attack but was not injured.
Detectives quickly identified Gobert as the alleged assailant, and he was taken into custody without incident, Clear said.
According to court records, Gobert has prior convictions for threatening a peace officer with a weapon, child endangerment, making terrorist threats, possession of cocaine for sale and criminal street gang activity.
It was not disclosed how long the convicted felon and Malveaux had been in a relationship.
