Southern California temperatures expected to drop by Sunday, though high winds may continue

Cold air sweeping out of Idaho will bring relief Sunday to Southern California residents who have been baking in summer-like heat even as they string Halloween decorations around their homes.

After daytime highs in the upper 80s to low 90s Saturday, temperatures are expected to drop by 10 to 20 degrees Sunday, with highs in the mid to upper 70s expected in the valleys and 50s and 60s in higher elevations most of the week, the National Weather Service said.

Even so, the winds that spread flames in more than a half-dozen wildfires this week will persist Sunday and Monday, though at a more moderate pace than in previous days. Peak winds will be 20 mph to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph, mostly in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.

“While there is an ample amount of uncertainty in terms of the strength and timing of this event, the potential for a significant event is growing. This could result in another period of fire weather conditions,” the weather service said.

Patchy frost is expected for parts of the High Desert on Monday.
