Poor air quality from Tick fire leads LAUSD to cancel all classes for San Fernando Valley schools

by Eric Licas

All Los Angeles Unified School District campuses in the San Fernando Valley will be closed Friday, Oct. 25, as poor air quality from the nearby Tick fire and Sepulveda Basin fire consume thousands of acres of brush in Canyon Country.

Classes and athletic actives at every school in the LAUSD’s Local Northeast region will be canceled, district officials announced Thursday night, Oct. 24, in a news release. The campuses of Community, Roscomare, Topanga, Valley View, Wonderland, and Elementary Community Day School will also be closed.

Further updates can be found on the LAUSD’s website, or via Twitter @LASchools.

Parents of students at independent charter institutions should check with school officials directly for scheduling information, officials said.

Classes at all schools in the Castaic Union School District, which serves the unincorporated communities Valencia and Castaic, and the William S. Hart Union High School District in Santa Clarita were also canceled for Friday.

Elevated levels of harmful fine particles were detected by the South Coast Air Qualilty Management District, resulting in a smoke advisory for areas near the fire.

Winds are expected to push harmful material from the Tick fire southwest into Santa Clarita, Porter Ranch, Simi Valley, Calabasas and western portions of the San Fernando Valley, according to SCAQMD.
