by Nathaniel Percy

A small plane crashed into a building shortly after taking off from Torrance Municipal Airport about noon on Thursday.

The crash was a mile east of the airport near Crenshaw Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway, said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The pilot was believed to be the sole occupant in the single-engine Cessna 177, Gregor said. The pilot’s condition was unknown.

It wasn’t known if anyone on the ground was injured as a result of the crash.
