Brush fire near 118, 5 freeways in Mission Hills forces shutdown, traffic chaos

by Josh Cain

A brush fire in Mission Hills Sunday afternoon forced the shutdown of all lanes of the nearby 118 Freeway.

The fire started at just past 12:30 p.m., Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. Flames could be seen on the northwest corner of the 118 and 5 freeway junction.

The California Highway Patrol said both sides of the 118 Freeway would be closed as firefighters tried to get the fire under control. Connectors from the 5 to the 118 were also closed. The shutdown created traffic chaos.

Officials said the flames were threatening homes adjacent to the freeway.

Humphrey said both LAFD ground crews and helicopters were responding to try to douse the fire.

This is a developing story. Please check back for details.
