Man Sentenced to 6 1/2 Years in Prison for Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash

A 26-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 6 1/2 years in prison for a hit-and-run crash that fatally injured a 77-year-old woman who was crossing a street in South Los Angeles last year.
Brandon Rosendo Mazariego of South Los Angeles pleaded no contest in June to charges stemming from the Nov. 13, 2018, crash that left Maria Asuncion Reynoso dead, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
It was an open plea heard by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Craig Richman, meaning the sentence was not negotiated with prosecutors.
The woman, who lived a few blocks away, was in a crosswalk when she was struck by a white Nissan Armada that was turning left onto 28th Street from South Budlong Avenue, authorities said.
Mazariego made no effort to stop after the crash, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
“After the collision, the vehicle reversed and fled northbound on Budlong Avenue from 28th Street at a high rate of speed,” according to a statement released by the Los Angeles Police Department shortly after the crash.
Reynoso was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.
LAPD detectives located surveillance video and identified the vehicle. Mazariego was arrested two days later, and the SUV was impounded, police said.
He pleaded no contest to one felony count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death to another person, one misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license and an infraction for driving without evidence of financial responsibility, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Mazariego also admitted that he had an October 2016 conviction for first-degree burglary with a person present and was on probation at the time of the collision, prosecutors said.
