A mentally disturbed man who allegedly committed an assault refused to come out of his house in Menifee Wednesday, culminating in a standoff with sheriff’s deputies, who feared he might be armed.
Deputies were called to the house in the 25800 block of Middlebury Way, near Sun City Boulevard, about 2:25 p.m. to investigate a complaint of “unknown trouble,” according to Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Robyn Flores.
She told City News Service that when deputies arrived, the suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, refused to leave his property.
After an investigation revealed that the man had allegedly assaulted someone at the location and that he might be armed, the situation escalated, and a SWAT unit was summoned to the scene, with negotiators continuing to try to convince the suspect to surrender.
Flores told CNS that it was confirmed the individual has a mental disorder, but no further details were provided.
Access to the area was limited as a public safety precaution.
There was no word on the status of the assault victim.
