A 56-year-old Palm Springs man accused of breaking into his neighbor’s home and attacking him with a knife, along with another resident who tried to intervene, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.

Raymond Bernal of Palm Springs was taken into custody in the early morning hours after allegedly carrying out the knife attack at the Horizon Mobile Home Park in the 100 block of Vega Drive.

He was booked at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of attempted murder, burglary and assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

Police were sent to the mobile home park about 2:20 a.m. on a report that a man had tried to kill a resident. The victim reported his neighbor had broke into his house and cut him with a knife, according to police. Another neighbor who heard the screams and entered the home to help struggled with the suspect and was also cut with a knife, investigators said.

Police said one of the two victims struck the suspect in the head with a hammer before he fled the home.

Both victims suffered knife wounds of unknown severity. It was not immediately clear if they were hospitalized.

Officers arrested Bernal at his home without incident.
