A man suspected of fatally stabbing a 25-year-old Riverside resident during an altercation near UC Riverside was being held without bail Wednesday.
Juan Manuel Perez, 24, was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of murder and possession of a deadly weapon in the death of Dominic Santos.
According to Riverside police Officer Javier Cabrera, the attack happened about 11:55 p.m. Monday in the 1400 block of University Avenue, near Iowa Avenue.
Cabrera alleged that Perez and Santos got into a physical confrontation on the street for unspecified reasons, and the suspect pulled a knife and plunged it into the victim’s chest.
Perez immediately fled, and witnesses called 911, according to the police spokesman. He said paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and initiated life-saving measures, but Santos died at the scene.
Detectives garnered sufficient evidence within hours identifying Perez as the alleged perpetrator, and a citywide search was conducted for the suspect, who was taken into custody without incident Tuesday afternoon on Central Avenue, Cabrera said.
No background information was available on Perez.
