A 64-year-old motorist suffered a massive heart attack and crashed on Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore, dying a short time later despite efforts to try to save him, authorities said Thursday.

Mark Gaylord of Fontana died about 6 p.m. Wednesday at Loma Linda Hospital in Murrieta..

Gaylord was driving northbound on the freeway near Railroad Canyon Road about 4:30 p.m. when he suffered a heart attack, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Mike Lassig said the victim was going roughly 45 mph when he lost control of the 2006 Chevrolet pickup, which veered into the center divider, then swerved back into lanes, drove onto the right shoulder and then back toward the center divider.

“The vehicle struck the concrete center divider and came to rest facing in a northwest direction,” Lassig said. “The impact caused minimal damage to the left front of the vehicle. The victim was located unresponsive in the driver seat.”

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics attempted life-saving measures at the scene, and Gaylord was taken to Loma Linda Hospital, where he died just over an hour later, according to Lassig.

No other motorists were involved in the crash.
