by Contributing Editor

Palm Springs police sought public help Thursday to identify and find a motorist who escaped after leading officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen SUV that crashed into a home.

Police were alerted Wednesday about 8:30 p.m. that a Volkswagen SUV reported stolen in Rancho Mirage was in the 3600 block of Ramon Road in Palm Springs, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

Officers attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver sped away before crashing the vehicle into a home in the area of East Mesquite Avenue and Desert Way and fleeing on foot, police said.

Despite the assistance of a police helicopter, the suspect got away.

No suspect description was provided.

Palm Springs police are asking residents living in the 700-900 block of Desert Way, along with the area of East Mesquite Avenue and Desert Way, to review any surveillance footage they may have.

Anyone with information was asked to call 760-323-8133. Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 760-341-7867.
