Man Arrested Twice in Two Days For Suspected Arson Fires

by Contributing Editor

A man authorities said is suffering from mental health issues was arrested twice in the past two days for igniting brush and shrubbery fires in Culver City, police said Friday.

At approximately 11:29 a.m. Wednesday, police received a radio call of a large brush fire in the 9500 block of Jefferson Boulevard, where Brice Pillar was identified as the suspect. He was arrested on suspicion of arson, transported to a local medical facility and placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold.

He was placed into the care of mental health professionals later that afternoon.

At 3:41 p.m. Thursday, police received a call of a fire in the area of Matteson Avenue and Sawtelle Boulevard, where the reporting party told police he was following the suspect who allegedly started the blaze.

Officers arriving on the scene reported a fence, along with shrubbery located on a San Diego (405) Freeway off-ramp, engulfed in flames. The fire was put out and there was no structural damage or injuries reported.

Pillar, who was being followed by a witness, was detained by police without incident and placed under arrest.
