Felon Charged With Hate Crime Attack in Westminster

by Contributing Editor

A Stanton man with prior strike convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and burglary was charged Thursday with a hate crime attack in Westminster.

Christopher Robargae, 33, is accused of attacking the victim at a park in Westminster while the man was playing basketball with his cousins, prosecutors said. The defendant allegedly used a slur for Black people and then attempted to punch the victim, prosecutors said.

As the man and his cousins left the basketball court and were trying to drive away, Robargae smashed the driver’s window with a hatchet, prosecutors alleged.

Robargae was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, a violation of civil rights with a violent injury, all felonies, and faces a sentencing enhancement for a hate crime. He was also charged with a misdemeanor count of vandalism.

Robargae pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana on Thursday. He was ordered to return to court July 13 for a pretrial hearing in the West Justice Center.

Robargae could face up to 38 years to life in prison if convicted at trial, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
