Man Released From Jail Following Arrest in Deadly Crash

by Contributing Editor

A 20-year-old man was released from jail Wednesday after authorities concluded that he was not street racing another driver when the other motorist died in a fatal crash near Beverly Hills last week.

In a charge evaluation worksheet, a prosecutor noted that Jefferson Guardadonajera was a “significant distance behind” Jason Lee Ross when the 43-year-old man lost control of his Chevrolet Camaro and struck multiple stationary objects, causing the car to break apart and eject him June 19 on San Vicente Boulevard, west of McCarthy Vista.

The document notes that Ross was “seen revving his engine and attempting to engage (Guardadonajera) in a drag race” and that an eyewitness reported that Guardadonajera “did not engage in the race though he did leave the traffic light at a high rate of speed.”

The document — which concluded from all available evidence that “there is no crime” — also notes that Ross changed lanes while Guardadonajera did not, and that Guardadonajera passed by Ross after the collision but had “no duty to stop and render aid or provide any information as he was not involved in the collision.”

Guardadonajera was arrested June 23 by the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Traffic Division and had been jailed since then until he was released shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, according to jail records.
