Man Allegedly Caught in Sheriff’s Sting Targeting Illegal Fireworks Sales

A 31-year-old man snared in a Riverside County sheriff’s crackdown in Lake Elsinore on illegal fireworks sales was out of custody Thursday.

Danish Saleem was arrested and booked into the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta Wednesday on suspicion of unlicensed sale of pyrotechnics, a misdemeanor. He posted a $5,000 bond and was released from custody later that night.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Reese, deputies became aware of possible illicit fireworks sales and set up a sting operation that culminated in Saleem allegedly agreeing to meet for a transaction, believing an undercover investigator was an area resident seeking to make a sizable purchase.

Reese alleged Saleem arranged to rendezvous with the buyer in the 30000 block of Grape Street about 5 p.m. Wednesday. During the meeting, Saleem was taken into custody without incident, and the products in his possession were seized.

The “numerous illegal fireworks” Saleem allegedly attempted to sell included cherry bombs, extra-large cannister shells, jumbo parachutes and Saturn batteries, Reese said.

County Ordinance No. 858 expressly prohibits the sale, storage and transportation of fireworks without a permit. Penalties for violations include fines ranging from $500 to $1,000, and a possible term of probation if convicted.
