Fire Leads To Explosion and Fireball Over Burbank Residential Neighborhood

by Contributing Editor

A fire at a Burbank Water and Power substation Friday triggered an explosion and fireball that briefly loomed over a dense residential neighborhood in Burbank, but there were no reports of injuries or damaged homes, police said.

There was no immediate word on what caused the fire, which was reported shortly before noon at the Lincoln Switching Station in the 1800 block of North Lincoln Street, said Burbank police Sgt. Derek Green.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, and nearby Pacific Avenue and Monterey Avenue were closed in the area as a precaution. Access to some residential streets off of Victory Boulevard was limited or closed, but all streets were reopened by 1:30 p.m. police said.

Some power was reportedly interrupted in the aftermath of the fire, but there was no widespread outage, Green said.
