Getty fire is tame overnight, with firefighters making progress

Firefighters surrounded more of the still-smoldering Getty fire in Los Angeles, getting a break as the forecasted strong winds were lighter than anticipated.

By Tuesday, the open flames had been extinguished. Overnight, the Los Angeles Fire Department said firefighting helicopters were able to perform a few night-time water drops when flare-ups popped up in the mountains above Brentwood.

The fire, which started early Monday morning and forced thousands to flee their homes, had burned about 700 acres as of Wednesday morning.

The fire was at 27% percent contained, up from 15 percent the night before, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

On Tuesday, city leaders were greatly concerned that Santa Ana winds would hit the area hard that night and into Wednesday and possibly kick up embers – making the Getty fire once again a raging blaze.

But overnight winds in the canyons west of the Sepulveda Pass were light, firefighters said.

Wednesday morning, in at least some neighborhoods, strong winds were present.

Los Angles Fire Department Chief Ralph Terrazas said because of any winds, which could kick up embers, those who were evacuated will probably be kept from there homes for a couple of days.

The fire started when a branch fell on a power line just north of The Getty Center and adjacent to the 405 Freeway, authorities said.

It burned through mountainous areas north of Brentwood and Santa Monica.
