Man Charged with Attempting to Sexually Assault Elderly Woman

A 50-year-old man with a previous conviction was charged Thursday with breaking into the home of an 88-year-old Laguna Niguel woman to sexually assault her.

Reginald Jamal Davis pleaded not guilty in his arraignment in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana to a felony count of assault with the intent to commit a sex offense, first-degree burglary, kidnapping to commit robbery or a sex crime, dissuading a witness from reporting a crime and inflicting injury on an elder adult, all felonies.

Davis also faces a sentencing enhancement for a crime against a vulnerable victim with prior convictions.

Davis was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in October 1996 in Los Angeles, according to court records.

A woman jogging in Laguna Niguel saw Davis running behind her about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday “acting bizarrely,” according to Orange County sheriff’s Sgt. Joses Walehwa. The frightened woman asked a passerby in a car to help her and they called 911, Walehwa said.

An 88-year-old woman called sheriff’s deputies at 8:25 p.m. Tuesday because someone was attempting to break into her home, Walehwa said. Davis is accused of forcing his way in and attempting to sexually assault the woman, but he was arrested by deputies responding to the 911 call, Walehwa added.

Davis was ordered to return to court for a pretrial hearing Aug. 23 in the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.
