SUNLAND — A man died at a hospital following a garage fire at a neighbor’s home in Sunland, authorities said Thursday.
Firefighters sent the 10700 block of Big Bend Avenue about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday were able to contain the fire to an attached garage, and knockdown was declared at 10:09 p.m., according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Two people who live in the home, a 49-year-old woman and an 89-year-old woman, were taken to a hospital, the younger woman in fair condition, the older woman in serious condition, Stewart said.
A 65-year-old man, described as a neighbor who was not in the home at the time of the fire, was taken to a hospital in grave condition and subsequently died, the LAFD reported. His name was withheld pending notification of his relatives. His cause of death was unknown.
Another neighbor, an approximately 80-year-old woman who was also not in the fire-damaged structure, was checked out for an undetermined medical complaint, Stewart said.
An investigation into the cause of the fire was underway.
