20-year sentence for man who mailed pipe bombs to Rep. Waters, Sen. Harris, Clinton, Obama, De Niro, Steyer

LOS ANGELES — A Florida man who mailed pipe bombs to top Democrats and Trump administration critics, including Los Angeles Rep. Maxine Waters, was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison.

Cesar Sayoc, 57, pleaded guilty in March in federal court in Manhattan to 65 felonies for sending 16 devices to 13 people last October, including former President Barack Obama, actor Robert De Niro and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Sayoc sent two devices to Waters — one that was intercepted at a congressional mail facility in Maryland and another that prompted an evacuation at a mail-processing facility in South Los Angeles. None of the devices mailed by Sayoc actually detonated. Packages also were sent to Sen. Kamala Harris in Sacramento and billionaire anti-Trump activist Tom Steyer in Burlingame.

An FBI SWAT team arrested Sayoc on Oct. 26 in Plantation, Florida, about 30 miles north of Miami, after the FBI said one of his fingerprints was found on one of the packages sent to Waters.

He could have been sent to prison for life.

In court Monday in Manhattan, Sayoc apologized for his actions.

“I am beyond so very sorry for what I did,” Sayoc said, admitting that he sent the devices “to threaten or intimidate.”
