Brush fire burning off 5 Freeway in Angeles National Forest

Firefighters were battling a brush fire that consumed at least 100 acres Saturday along the northbound 5 Freeway at Templin Highway in the Angeles National Forest.

The fire was reported at 12:46 p.m. by a witness who told the California Highway Patrol that a black Kia Sorento was burning on the right shoulder, the CHP said. By 12:53 p.m. the car was fully engulfed in flames which were pushed by northeast winds into the brush along the road.

The fire had a “moderate rate of spread,” U.S. Forest Service spokesman Nathan Judy said.

All northbound freeway lanes were shut down at 1:17 p.m. but lanes 1 and 2 were reopened at 1:20 p.m. and a Sigalert was issued keeping lanes 3 and 4 shut down indefinitely, the CHP said.

No injuries were reported, Judy said.
